Koh Waeo: The Quiet Island Most Visitors to Phuket Never See

A small island off Phuket's east coast where the water turns glass-clear and the only sound is your longtail cutting the engine. Half a day worth the detour from Bangtao.

Most visitors to Phuket follow the same path — Phi Phi at sunrise, Similan in season, James Bond on the day there's nothing else to do. Koh Waeo is the one nobody talks about. A sliver of sand, a shoulder of limestone, water clear enough that the longtail throws a shadow on the seabed. You can have it half-empty on a Wednesday morning.

Why go

Because it isn't a postcard. It's a real piece of the Andaman that hasn't been arranged for you yet. The swim is calm, the shade is generous when the sun gets vertical, and the silence is the kind you forget is possible until you stand inside it for an hour.

Getting there from Bangtao

From the house it's a drive across the island to one of the east-coast piers — Bang Rong is the closest, Ao Po a stronger second. Longtail boatmen know Koh Waeo by name. Charter prices are negotiable; go in the morning, when the wind is asleep and the rate is friendlier. We're happy to help arrange a boat — just ask.

What to pack

  • Reef-safe sunscreen — the coral notices
  • Two litres of water per person
  • Snorkel and mask (boatmen sometimes lend, don't count on it)
  • Dry bag for phones and wallets
  • A wide hat — shade on the boat is thin
  • Snacks or a packed lunch from the house

Best time to visit

November to April is the dry season — flat water, predictable blue. May through October the Andaman gets moody; some days are gifts, some are washouts. If you go in the green season, watch the morning forecast and be willing to flip your plans.

One favour

Pack out what you pack in. Koh Waeo stays the way it is because the small number of people who find it treat it gently. Be one of them, and tell your friends about the food in Cherngtalay instead.
